"My grandfather, James, came from Scotland when he was twelve years old and married Esther Inwood who came from England. They settled near Rockford, Michigan and raised a large family.  James was called to the Union army in the Civil War, leaving his large family at home on a farm.  My dad remembered his dad going to war."
