Rockford Register Newspaper Rockford, Michigan - Wed. Dec. 2, 1903 IN MEMORIAM James Pennington was born near Glasgow, Scotland, Aug. 12th, 1832, and died Nov. 24th, 1903, aged 71 years, 3 months and 12 days. His father died when he was a baby and his mother passed away when he was but 12 years of age, thus he was left an orphan. At the age of 18 he came to the U.S.A., making his home in Armada, Macomb County, Michigan, where he lived until his marriage with Esther Inwood, which occurred Feb. 12th, 1857. They resided near Romeo for about three years, then moved into Plainfield Township, living there for two years. He then purchased a farm in Courtland, where they have resided until last week Tuesday, after a brief illness, the spirit took its departure. He was the father of eight children, two died in childhood, leaving six with their widowed mother, to mourn the loss of a father beloved. Mr. Pennington served nearly a year in the Civil War, enlisting Oct. 4, 1864, in Company G, Ninth Regiment of New York Cavalry, and receiving an honorable discharge July 17th, 1865. He was a member of the Rockford G.A.R. Post. The funeral services were held from the house on Friday, Nov. 27th, by the Rev. R. J. Marriage to Esther Inwood
James Pennington married Esther Inwood in Macomb County, Michigan on Feb. 12, 1857. Esther was the daughter of William Inwood and Charlotte Remnent having emigrated with her family from London, England to New York City on the 24th of April, 1837. The family of 8 sailed aboard the 'British Barque Egyptian' (passenger list below).
Esther's father William was a bricklayer (mason) by trade. When emigrating, William was 39, Charlotte was 29, their eldest daughter Ruth was 11, Anne was 8, James was 6, Mary was 4, Esther was 2, and William was only 1. See Baptismal Records.

WILLIAM INWOOD. P.O. Romeo, was born February 28, 1791, at Headley Park, Hampshire, England: is son of James and Mary Inwood, the former a native of Hampshire, England, the latter of Batts' Corners, Surrey, England. William Inwood and his wife, grandparents of Mr. Inwood of this sketch, were born in the same shire in England. Mr. Inwood was married in March, 1821, to Charlotte Remnent of Surrey, England; of ten children born to them, seven are still living - three sons and four daughters, viz.: Ruth, Mrs. Andrew Wood of Fentonville, Genesee County; James, living in Cannon, Kent Co., Mich.: Mary, Mrs. Henry Douglass, of Fentonville, Mich.; Esther, Mrs. Pennington of Rockford, Kent Co., Mich.; William, farmer in Washington; Henry and Araminta, residing with their parents.
Mr. Inwood landed at New York in the spring of 1837, and settled in Washington, where he has spent the majority of his time, working at his trade of mason and bricklayer: about twenty years ago, he located on 200 acres of land, which constitutes his present homestead; he and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Inwood is the second oldest man in the town, and is ninety-one years old; he served in the battle of Waterloo, and his grandfather was a soldier in the British army during the entire struggle between Great Britain and the Colonies. Mr. Inwood is a Republican in political views.
