Affidavit of an Officer or Comrade - John N. Gilley - 10 June 1895
John N. Gilley - aged 56 years - a resident of Cold Spring in the County of Stearns and State of Minnesota states that he is acquainted with James Pennington who belonged to Company G 9 Regiment of NY Cav Vols. and who, while in the line of his duty at or near Winchester in the State of VA did, on or about the 31 day of December 1864, become disabled in the following manner, viz:
"By horse stumbling and was thrown to the ground and I see Chas. Rycroft, also a member of Co. G help Pennington up and assist him to a place to set down. This was late in the afternoon and later in the evening I heard Rycroft say that Jim (meaning Pennington) was pretty badly hurt. I noticed that Pennington was somewhat white in the face at the time when Rycroft helped him up but did not pay much attention as we were preparing for camp and the weather was very cold."
That the facts stated are personally known to the affiant by reason of... "I was with the command at the time and see the horse stumble and see Pennington fall to the ground and see Chas. Rycroft help him up and care for him and Pennington's horse."
And deponent further states that he is well acquainted with the said soldier James Pennington and further, that his knowledge of the facts above stated is derived from said acquaintance, and from having served as Corporal of Company G of the 9th Regiment of NY Cav volunteers from the 11 day of Oct 1861 to the 12 day of May 1865 and that he is totally disinterested in this claim.

Inquiry Letter Reply - Thomas Rycroft - 10 Dec. 1895
Affidavit of an Officer or Comrade - Thomas Rycroft - 23 March 1895
Thomas Rycroft - aged 66 years - states that he is acquainted with James Pennington who belonged to Company G 9 Regiment of NY Cavy Vols and who while in the line of duty, at or near Winchester in the States of Virginia did, on or about the ___ day of January 1865, become disabled in the following manner, viz:
"That the affiant states that the claimant James Pennington and himself and others were ordered from Pleasant Valley, Maryland to Winchester, VA - his recollection in December 1864. Then he and Pennington and others were ordered out on a raid to Gordonsville, VA and returned to Winchester, VA after bring out about two weeks. And after said raid while at Winchester, VA the claimant complained of rheumatism, varicocele and abscessed prostate gland which the (?) was in his opinion was caused from exposure in line of duty while on the above raids and from which the claimant complained of and was unable for duty some time. That he made an oral statement to J C (Baden?) at Madisonville, KY on (?) 23, 1895 and (?) same was written in his presence that he was not aided or (prompted ?). ? ? or written in printed statement in making ? ?.
That the facts stated are personally know to the affiant by reason of:
Being with claimant in same company and was together on the above raids that he was with him while he was sick and waited on him.
