William Wallace Pennington was born in April of 1858 at Romeo, Macomb County, Michigan. The 1880 Census shows William living at home on the Pennington farm in Courtland at the age of 22. On Dec. 30, 1891, William Wallace married Edith N. George (a native Wisconsin - 11 years his younger) in Shawano, Wisconsin. Here they had their first son Guy in Feb. of 1893.
Later that year in 1893, William, Edith and Guy made a new home in Deerfield township, Chickasaw County, Iowa. This is where their second son Clarence was born - Feb. 1895. Dewey their third son was born March of 1899. The obituary to the left records that William and Edith lived on their farm since 1893. They only had 3 sons: Dewey - who farmed the Pennington farm; Clarence - who farmed near Rockford, Iowa; and Guy who moved back to Marshfield, Wisconsin.
The following information was taken from a 1977 letter written by Dewey Pennington. These are his words - his account. Read the full account here.
"My grandfather, James, came from Scotland when he was twelve years old and married Esther Inwood who came from England. They settled near Rockford, Michigan and raised a large family. James was called to the Union army in the Civil War, leaving his large family at home on a farm. My dad remembered his dad going to war.
My dad, William W. Pennington, was born at Rome in McComb County, Michigan on May 13, 1858. He worked in the woods in Michigan and then in the Wisconsin woods and saw mills as a sawyer for the Georges. My mother, after graduating, taught school in Rhinelander and on December 30, 1891 married William Pennington. Three children were born to this union. Guy was born in Shawano in February, 1893; Clarence in February, 1895; and Dewey in March 1899. William, Edith and Guy moved from Shawano to this farm (Iowa) in the fall of 1893. Clarence and Dewey were born on this farm. My dad passed away May 29, 1948, living 90 years and sixteen days. They had lived together on this farm 55 years. Mother then moved to Charles City and died in November, 1950 at 82 years of age. Guy now lives near Springfield, Missouri, and Clarence on a farm north of Rockford, Iowa. Dewey continued on the farm north of Bassett and married Audrey Gilsbeck on August 27, 1924. To this union a son and daughter were born." |
